Protecting Animal Lives

Animals are an integral part of our ecosystem and deserve our love, care, and protection. Nabatara Foundation’s Protecting Animal Lives programme is dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of stray, abandoned, and abused animals. Our initiatives focus on rescue operations, medical care, rehabilitation, and finding loving homes for animals in need.

Animal Rescue NGO Kolkata: Saving Lives on the Streets of Bengal

When monsoon floods submerged Kolkata's eastern neighborhoods last July, our team waded through chest-deep water to rescue 17 stranded dogs from crumbling rooftops. This relentless commitment defines Nabatara Foundation's animal rescue work—where every ambulance siren echoes our promise to protect the city's voiceless creatures.

Crisis & Response: Kolkata's Stray Emergency

With 85,000+ stray dogs and 12,000+ injured animals reported annually across West Bengal, our interventions address:

Rabies outbreaks

30% of human rabies deaths originate from unvaccinated strays

Monsoon hazards

Electrocutions, drowning, and snakebites surge June-September

Human-animal conflict

70% of street dogs suffer stone pelting or kicking

GeneralQuestions

1 . How quickly do you respond to emergencies?

Within 90 minutes across Kolkata. When a collapsed building trapped 3 dogs in Behala last monsoon, our team used seismic sensors to locate them in 17 minutes. All survived with minor injuries.

2 . Can I adopt if I live in a small apartment?

Absolutely! We've placed 37 pets in 1BHK homes. Take Leo—a indie dog thriving in a 400 sq ft Salt Lake flat. We assess balcony safety, walking routines, and landlord policies pre-adoption.

3 . How do you handle venomous snake rescues?

Certified handlers use snake hooks and infrared goggles. The 3-step protocol: tranquilize (if indoors), bag, release in Chintamoni Kar Sanctuary. Zero human fatalities in 8 years.

4 . Are street dogs released after treatment?

Only after sterilization, vaccination, and ear-notching for identification. Rani—treated for maggot wounds—now guards a Sealdah tea stall. Her owner gets free vet check-ups.

5 . Can businesses sponsor ambulances?

Yes. ICICI Bank funds Ambulance #4 (₹7 lakhs/year). Your company logo appears on the vehicle and 20,000+ treatment reports annually. Fuel/maintenance included.

6 . What distinguishes your ABC program

We use ISO-certified equipment and track released dogs via ear-tag GPS. In Dhapa, our sterilisations reduced street births by 78%—proven by municipal surveys.

7 . How do you prevent rabies effectively?

Through "Ring Vaccination": immunizing all dogs within 1km of a bite case. Coupled with school workshops teaching "Don't Panic, Inform" protocols. Zero human deaths in serviced areas since 2022.

8 . Can I volunteer without medical training?

75% of roles need no expertise: feeding neonates, socializing shy dogs, or managing crowdfunding campaigns. Retired teacher Mrs. Das reads to trauma patients daily.

9 . What’s your biggest equipment need?

Waterproof animal capture nets (₹8,500/unit). During floods, these save 3x more lives than barehanded rescues. Our current nets are patched with duct tape.

10 . How are legal cruelty cases handled?

We file FIRs under Sec 11 PCA Act + Sec 429 IPC. When a Baguiati shopkeeper starved 5 puppies, we secured a ₹50,000 fine and his community service at our shelter.

11 . Why focus on community feeders?

Local knowledge saves lives. Feeder Ramudaidi alerted us to a rabid dog in Rajarhat. We contained it before bites occurred. Feeders get rabies vaccines and ID cards.

12 . What happens to unadoptable animals?

Critically disabled animals join our "Sanctuary Program." Blind cat Mr. Whiskers leads rodent control at a Howrah orphanage. 92 such animals live in protected environments.
